Jackie Chan receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award

Jackie Chan takes foot out of mouth
Hong Kong action star Jackie Chan (成龙) appeared overwhelmed on receiving the Outstanding Achievement Award at the Asia Pacific Film Festival held in Taipei Saturday night.
“Too excited!” he panted when standing on the stage, clenching his fist.

“I thank those who don’t support me. Your criticisms pushed me forward to make progress.  With all those controversies in the past, I was good intentioned,” the 56-year-old said.

Despite being an international superstar, the straightforward Jackie has caused uproar on many occasions, making him a public target of condemnation.

In 2004, he criticized that Taiwan’s presidential election was “the biggest joke in the world.”
In 2009, he said at the Boao Forum that Chinese people had too much freedom and needed to be controlled.

In August, he expressed support on his Twitter account for the Filipino police, which poorly handled a hostage-taking crisis that involved HK citizens.

He also said Hong Kong people were not bitter about the incident, which drew flak from netizens.
